My early high school years were a tremendous struggle. Why? Because I listened to what the negative influences around me were saying: there’s no point in finishing school, education isn’t for people like us, and opportunities in life are limited anyway. As a result, I failed to apply myself and failed nearly all of my academic classes.

What is the Urban Youth Empowerment Program?
Funded by the United States Department of Labor, the Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP) engages at-risk and adjudicated youth for entry into the workforce through a comprehensive set of services, including:
- Case management
- Restorative justice
- Education
- Mentoring
- Internships
- On-the-job training
